Al Jazeera International - Soddom and Gommorah

18th November 2008 for Al Jazeera International

'Sodom and Gomorrah' takes a look into the growth in so-called sex tourism to the north of the island with girls as young as eleven selling themselves to foreign, mostly European tourists

Filmed as part of AJI's People and Power serie, Soddom and Gommorah tells the story of Madagascar's child sex workers. UNICEF estimates 30-50% of the countries prostitutes are under 18 years of age - a greater proportion than in Cambodia - with the vast majority driven to the work by economic insecurity.

UNICEF say that most young girls start working at 15 or 16 years of age, but with the increase in so-called sex tourism in recent years UNICEF have found girls as young as 12 at work in the hotels, beaches and swimming pools of the coastal resorts and hotels.
